POLYAMIDE PA6, PA6G, PA6.6

The Polyamides, abbreviated to PA, are a family of technopolymers mostly known under the trademark Nylon® belonging to Du Pont (other well-known brands are: Ertalon, Sustamid). They are obtained both by extrusion and by casting. Depending on the production method, the starting granule and the addition of fillers in the mix, they are divided into different types.

Features and Types

Among the main characteristics of PA 6 there is a high resistance to impact and wear, it is tough and has good abrasion resistance. This technopolymer withstands operating temperatures between -40 ° C and 100 ° C. Machinability on machine tools is satisfactory but, compared to POM-C, it is not suitable for obtaining close tolerances due to its structure and its hydroscopicity (high moisture absorption) which determines dimensional deviations.

PA6 (Extruded)
Extruded Polyamide is the most used type due to its good mechanical characteristics that make it usable in many fields and at an excellent quality / price ratio. It has a white (natural) or black (pigmented) color.
PA+ MOS o So.Mo. (Filled with molybdenum disulfide) has a lower friction coefficient and therefore better smoothness; a lower absorption of humidity and an increase in resistance to UV rays. Color is always black. Improve machinability on machine tools.
PA+ GF30 (30% Glass Fiber Filled) greatly increases resistance to abrasion and wear, improves tensile and compressive strength and also improves dimensional stability in processing with increasing temperature. Black color.

PA6G (Cast)
Cast PA6 has better mechanical characteristics (compared to extruded products) that are very close to the same found in PA66; machinability on machine tools (lathe or numerical control) is simpler: the material does not “knead and chip” like the extruded PA6, in addition to this it allows the creation of more dimensionally stable parts.
PA6G + MOS o So.Mo. (filled with molybdenum disulfide) has a lower friction coefficient and therefore better smoothness; a lower absorption of humidity and an increase in resistance to UV rays. It always comes in black. Improve machinability on machine tools.
PA6G+Oil (filled with Oil) the addition of oil particles give a lower coefficient of friction and better smoothness, it also decreases the absorption of moisture and increases resistance to UV rays. Improve machinability on machine tools.

PA6.6
Polyamide 6.6 is obtained from the polymerization of hexamethylenediamine and adipic acid. Compared to PA6 it has greater rigidity, as well as resistance to wear and abrasion. It has a lower water absorption and a higher resistance to temperature; however, it has a lower impact resistance and a lower cushioning power. These superior characteristics give it excellent behavior during mechanical processing, making it ideal for use with automatic machines.

Processing

PA6 is widely used due to its cheapness, but it is not very suitable for processing with automatic machines due to the elasticity of the chip that “knead” the tools; problems that are solved by adding fillers such as So.Mo. to the mixture. The PAG or PA6.6 type, on the other hand, they are very suitable for automatic machinery (also here any fillers improve its characteristics and workability).

Applications

The PA has applications mainly in the Mechanical Industry for the construction of supports, guides, pulley plates, rollers. In the chemical industry, as it is resistant to alkalis, inorganic compounds and solvents. For use in the food sector, it requires a specific certified production. While the non-constancy of the electrical characteristics with the variation of the absorbed humidity strongly limits its use in the electrical sector.
